This is truly a unique piece-carved from soapstone. This Nomali figure is found in the Kissi territory of Sierra Leone. It is believed if placed under houses to attract a good harvest and keep away evil spirits. <br>Their age is uncertain, but evidence suggests they predate the 15th and 16th centuries.<br>They are considered among the earliest forms of art from the West African region.<br><br>This figure is approximately 9”T<br><br>In a sitting self embracing pose this piece is a great decorative item as well as a unique conversation starter. <br>Preowned in good vintage condition.
